<p>In the first quarter of the 19 century, industrialisation and population growth are massively undergoing in most North American cities. Water treatment begun around 1845 in Montreal when &#8221;la Corporation de la Cité de Montréal acquires &#8221;la Compagnie de l&#8217;Aqueduc&#8221;. By the time, the system was mostly constituted of partial private propriety made since the early 1800. Montreal being what it is, an island, it is inevitable that flooding occurs. In 1886, one of the worst flooding of the city development happened to most people disagreement. In addition to the cholera epidemics (1832) and typhoid fever (1874) we attributed to stagnant water, flood damage will ensure that a system of containment and pumping parallel to the water systems and sewer already in place had to be constructed. At this particular system belongs the pumping station &#8211;(1887).</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">Inspection of M. St.-George: ‘’The principal low level sewer of the city passes this point at a level of twenty-six feet below the height reached by the flood, entering the city by this sewer is the object of this pumping station. The essential features of the work are: An iron penstock gate, to be close when the river is at flood; the sewerage, dammed up by the closing of this gate, will be conveyed to the pumping station by a brick flume and distributed by six smaller flumes to four centrifugal pumps that have combined discharge of 72,000 gallons per minutes. The sewerage will be raised by these pumps fifteen feet, and discharged into the same sewer from which it was pumped, but at the other side of the penstock gate. The motive power will be two pairs automatic engines of 300 horse power each, manufactured by Laurie &amp; Bro., of this city (…) The party then drove to the Mill street pumping station, which is still far from complete at the time. It is similar in design to the other. ‘’</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">Historians have been unable to obtain more information on how specific and particular quality of the equipment of the Station &#8211;. The station was, however, the one with the greatest capacity to every other station pumps that exist in the city and this until 1960. It comprises four centrifugal pumps Webber American-made with a total capacity of 42 000 GIPM, and as much steam engines built by the J. Laurie &amp; Bro. builders, Montreal, which are all authentic. Sadly, the steam system of the plant has now disappeared. No significant changes have been made to the building.</p>

<p>During the years 1970, the city could not carry more than the maintenance of the building because it is increasingly difficult to recruit skilled engineers to run the pumps. Unless necessary, a notice is sent to stop all activities of the station for a second year. It will follow the recommendation to abandon both stations &#8212; and &#8212; and lead to halting their maintenance condition. In 1980 on orders to cease maintenance of steam systems of the two stations but ahead pending the commissioning of the interceptor south of the CUM (Communauté Urbaine de Montréal), it is recommended to maintain the &#8211;. The abandonment of &#8212; pumping station is done in 1987.</p>

The equipment that holds the basement of the building belongs to the first generations of pumps used for sewage disposal in the 19th century in North America.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%;"><span style="font-size:10pt;line-height:150%;">Parmi les amis – ou du moins les relations – se trouvait un employé de la Banque de Montréal qui m’avait avait fourni des plans des fondations du vénérable siège social de l’institution financière. À la  Ville de Montréal, je connaissais aussi une obligeante personne qui s’était arrangée pour me laisser voir un plan des égouts de la métropole. De 7 heures du matin à 4 heures de l’après-midi, durant plus de quatre mois à respirer les miasmes de l’endroit confiné, nous creusions vers le butin. Ce fut un combat constant contre l’humidité, la maladie et l’affaiblissement, on aurait dit que toutes les saloperies qui avaient suinté des bas-fonds de la métropole depuis un siècle s’étaient ramassées là. La rue est droite comme une autoroute, nous avons pu y érigé trois petites digues de retenue pour pouvoir utiliser nos deux Zodiac. Il fallait boiser le tunnel à tous les mètres au moyen de panneaux de contreplaqué de trois quarts de pouce, maintenus par des pièces de 2&#215;4 et par des étais télescopiques en métal. Un système d’éclairage et de ventilation sommaire avait aussi été installé. Nous nous retrouvions le matin vers 5h30 dans un restaurant pour camionneurs à Laprairie, où des filles très peu vêtues et aux charmes fanés nous servaient des petits-déjeuners prétendument érotiques. Vers sept heures, nous installions notre camion au-dessus d’un regard d’égout qui se trouvait près d’un stationnement réservé au corps diplomatique et nous descendions dans notre enfer. Nous savions par notre taupe de Sécur que la <em>money room</em> contenait parfois jusqu’à un demi-milliard en argent. Il nous a fallu 17 heures pour traverser le mur avec une perceuse manuelle. Nous avons su que notre but était atteint lorsqu’un rai de lumière est apparu. Tout semblait aller selon nos plans, Nous avions décidé le coup après les fêtes de 1992 et étions arrivés à Mars 1993. Un beau matin, nous avons constaté que la voûte de notre tunnel s’était effondrée et que l’air frais s’insinuait dans notre excavation. Le bonhomme printemps venait de nous faire regretter pour toujours notre coup qui venait de tomber à l’eau. Vers 7h30, le 5 Avril, une employée de la banque signalait une situation dangereuse sur le trottoir. Un arbre s’était enfoncé d’un bon mètre avec la fonte des neiges. Les curieux confirmèrent la présence d’une odeur pestilentielle qui montait des entrailles de la terre. Si l’arbre avait été convenablement planté, si le sol n’avait pas dégelé, si la chenillette n’avait pas passé, si les cols bleus avait bien planté l’arbre, les choses auraient pris une autre tournure, mais avec des si, on va à Paris. <em><span style="color:#333333;">‘<strong>’The agony of defeat…’’</strong></span></em></span></p>

La firme d’ingénierie de Chicago John S. Metcalf Company est choisie pour ce projet. En 1904, les travaux d’excavation de l’élévateur débutent. Metcalf développe un projet composé d’un système de silos carrés formés de plaques d’acier. Le 28 avril 1906, on inaugure officiellement le nouveau silo qui a une capacité de 1 million de boisseaux. Le nouvel édifice innove en prenant livraison aussi bien des wagons que des barges.En 1913, les besoins grandissants du port commandent l’extension des installations existantes. La compagnie du Grand Tronc fait construire, à l’ouest, une annexe faite de cylindres de béton intégrée au bâtiment. Cette annexe reflète les avancées rapides de l’ingénierie de construction de l’époque avec l’introduction du béton qui supplante graduellement l’acier.Au début des années 1920, la Commission du havre crée un comité (Grain Elevator Committee) qui recommande l’achat de l’élévateur B par la Commission, une opération rendue possible depuis la nationalisation du Grand Tronc au début des années 1920 (Canadien National). En 1923, les ententes de principes sont signées, mais les modalités du transfert foncier s’échelonnent jusqu’en 1925.Les nouveaux propriétaires ordonnent dès 1923 l’agrandissement de l’annexe de 1913. La firme John S. Metcalf s’occupe encore une fois des travaux. Au terme de l’opération, en 1925, la capacité de l’élévateur B est portée à environ 3 500 000 boisseaux. À la fin des années 1950, on construit, à l’est, l’immense élévateur B-1. En 1963, on relie l’élévateur B par convoyeurs aériens avec le silo B-1. Les deux structures sont fusionnées et forment le silo no 5.Dans le Vieux-Port, seul le silo no 5 a échappé à la démolition et une importante campagne de sauvegarde du bâtiment est mise en branle dans les années 1990.</h5>

<h5>       Farine Five Roses est une enseigne immanquable lorsque l’on pense au Vieux-Port de Montréal. Érigé en 1948 sur le toit d’Ogilvie Flour Mill, le néon se nommait ainsi. Lors la révolution tranquille, la législation de la langue française, Loi 101,  entraina le retrait du ‘’Flour’’ de l’enseigne surplombant la ville. Ironiquement, le Five Roses était considéré comme étant acceptable puisqu’il faisait parti intégrante du nom de la compagnie. En 1993 la compagnie est entièrement achetée par Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM). À la mi-juillet de l’été 2006 ADM venait de vendre à la firme J.M. Smucker. Malgré que l’ancienne entreprise était toujours propriétaire des néons, il ne désirait plus promouvoir une marque qui n’était plus la leur et le signe fût fermé. Après de nombreuses couvertures médiatiques et publiques défavorable à sa fermeture, il se vit allumé pour dieu sait combien de temps. ‘’Farine Five Roses’’ est devenue une partie intégrante de l’histoire industrielle de Montréal, à même titre que la croix sur le Mont-Royal. <h5><i><font> &#8221;La valeur symbolique du lieu en tant qu&#8217;église active, longtemps maintenue par la communauté syrienne catholique, n&#8217;existe plus. Cette église élevée au rang de cathédrale est depuis bientôt dix ans laissée sans utilisation et symbolise, pour plusieurs, la désolation. Malgré une certaine présence volumétrique et une localisation stratégique, l&#8217;église Saint-Sauveur n&#8217;est plus un point de repère depuis la perte de sa flèche. Comme certaines églises sont identifiées par la couleur de la toiture (Saint James the Evangelist avec sa toiture rouge), celle-ci peut être identifiée par des caractéristiques négatives comme l&#8217;église au petit clocher rouillé, ou encore celle aux fenêtres barricadées. Depuis quelques années, une foule envahissante est constamment présente devant l&#8217;église, offrant des services de lavage de vitre aux automobilistes. Ceci peut aussi constituer un point de repère négatif.</font></i></h5>
<h5><i><font>L&#8217;église est la troisième plus ancienne du quartier. Son organisation suit nombre de préceptes mis de l&#8217;avant par l&#8217;église anglicane de cette époque. L&#8217;aspect expressif de l&#8217;église qui se traduit par la qualité et l&#8217;appareillage des matériaux subsiste toujours pour l&#8217;ouvrage de maçonnerie. Malheureusement, les choix quant à la reconstruction de la flèche et au revêtement de la toiture, ont altéré son expression architecturale formelle. La perte de la flèche est incontestablement majeure. Le décor intérieur de 1923 constitue aussi une perte au regard de l&#8217;intégrité du bâtiment. Le «nouveau» bâtiment de 1923 n&#8217;offre donc pas la qualité et le souci de composition du précédent.&#8221;</font></i></h5>

Lors de la construction du pont Wellington en 1995, l’extrême sud du tunnel fut remblayé de ciment et l’une des deux tours de ventilation devint à l’abandon, tandis que l’autre se vit recyclée en station de pompage pour la ville. Aujourd’hui, l’endroit n’est qu’un simple vestige d’une structure de béton et de métal qui se délabre en laissant derrière elle une trace de notre système de transport montréalais.<span style="font-family:'Recognita Book SSi';"></span></h5>
